WHAT IS ISO/IEC 17025?

Companies have to ensure delivering continuously consistent high quality products and/or services if they want to be successful in the marketplace long term. Quality improvement has become a key national and international business strategy. ISO/IEC 17025 is the standard used by many testing and calibration laboratories Accreditation requires that a set of Policies and Procedures be developed, maintained and followed with supporting documented proof to ensure compliance with the ISO/IEC 17025 checklist. These policies and procedures are called the Quality Management System.

There are two main sections in ISO/IEC 17025 - Management Requirements and Technical Requirements.

arrow Management requirements are primarily related to the operation and effectiveness of the Quality Management System within the laboratory. A prerequisite for laboratory accreditation is to have a well documented Quality Management System.
arrow Technical requirements address the competence of staff, methodology and test/calibration equipment in adherence to the Quality Management System.
Laboratories use ISO/IEC 17025 to implement a quality system aimed at improving their ability to consistently produce auditable, measurable and repeatable results. It is also the basis for accreditation from an Accreditation Body. Since the standard is about competence, accreditation is the formal recognition of a demonstration of that competence.
